The fourth generation of the BMW M5 was the first Touring to bear the M badge after an interruption of twelve years. The model with the legendary 10-cylinder engine and 507 hp was already a sports car for individualists as a sedan – as a Touring it achieved rarity status. In 2000, the M GmbH presented the BMW M3 Touring Concept.

An M version of the X5 would come to fruition only several years later, so it’s hard to believe this was the core reason behind the manufacturer’s idea to scrap the M3 E46 Wagon. Nearly a decade before it had conceptualized the M3 E46 Wagon Concept, BMW sold the M5 E34 Touring, which didn’t turn out to be a massive success.
